Antimicrobial Therapy of Surgical Infection

Abstract
As long as human being exists on earth, microorganism will continue to exert their territorial imperative and germ free environment is out of consideration at present biological world. The interrelationship among man, his resistance and microorganism form the basis for an understanding of the biology of surgical infection. Both blind reliance and "tincture of time" attitudes- toward currently effective antibiotics seem unrealistic. Upon administration of antibiotics into the hostbacteria equation, it is well to consider carefully their effectiveness to certain pathogens by means of laboratory studies and good clinical judgement for an optimum result. Antibiotic therapy in surgical infection has been and should be second to appropriate practice of surgical antiseptic principles, and reliance on host defense mechanism is final goal.
In second part of this series, some rules of antibiotic therapy, antibacterial action of common antimicrobial agents, adverse reaction and choice of antibiotics are reviewed.
